Child support is established using a mathematical formula created by the Minnesota Legislature. The formula is computerized; various numbers are plugged into the program and a number is determined that considers all of the relevant factors. Some of these factors include: the earnings of each parent, any special needs of the child, child care costs necessary for a parent to work, and the amount of time each parent has the child in their care. This issue is largely factual in nature, and the amount paid or received is established by a set formula.
